Ice Dam Removal

Ice Dam Repair Done Right — The First Time

A.F.T. Insulation Contractors has been fixing ice dams for homeowners across Westport and Southeastern Massachusetts for over 10 years. We are not general contractors who dabble in roofing. Ice dam prevention is a specialty that requires real knowledge of how heat moves through a home — and we have it.

Every winter, homeowners call contractors who install heat tape, add ventilation, or throw baffles in the attic. The bills get paid. The dams come back the next winter. That cycle ends when you call the right contractor.

We diagnose the actual cause in your specific attic, air seal the leaks, and install the right insulation. The ice dams stop. The heating and cooling bills drop. And unlike the patchwork solutions other contractors sell, you never have to deal with this again.

Benefits of Quality Attic Insulation

The One Real Cause of Ice Dams

Ice dams form when heat from your living space leaks into the attic, warms the roof deck, and melts snow that then refreezes at the cold eaves. The dam grows, water backs up behind it, and eventually finds its way under the shingles and into the home.

That is the entire mechanism. And it only happens because the attic floor is not properly air sealed and insulated. Fix that — and the dams cannot form.

Problem vs Reality

What Contractors Do Why It Fails
Heat tape installation Melts a channel but ice dam reforms beside it
Ridge and soffit vents Improves airflow but cannot stop attic heat loss
Baffles installed Protect airflow but provide no insulation benefit
Surface-level fixes Do not address warm air escaping into the attic

They treat the symptom. They never fix the cause.

What We Do Instead

Our Process Result
Full attic inspection Finds every air leakage source
Complete air sealing Stops warm air from reaching the roof deck
Spray foam at eaves Protects the most vulnerable roof areas
Proper R-value installation Keeps the attic consistently cold year-round

The attic stays cold. No melt, no dam, no water damage. Permanently.

Why Other Contractors Fail

  • Heat tape melts a channel but the dam reforms beside it
  • Ridge and soffit vents moderate temperature but cannot offset a leaky attic floor
  • Baffles protect vent airflow — they add zero insulation value
  • None of these stop the heat from escaping in the first place

They treat the symptom. They never fix the cause.

What We Do Instead

  • Inspect the attic and pinpoint every air leakage pathway
  • Air seal all gaps before any insulation goes in
  • Install spray foam insulation at the critical eave areas
  • Bring the attic to proper R-value across the entire floor

The attic stays cold. No melt, no dam, no water damage. Permanently.

Our Solution Is Cheaper — And It Actually Works

This is where it gets straightforward. Heat tape installation has an upfront cost plus $200–$400 per year in electricity, every year, indefinitely. It also degrades and needs replacement. Ventilation upgrades add cost without solving anything. Repeated roof repairs from water damage add more.

Our solution is a single investment. No electricity draw. No annual service. No repeat water damage. And it lowers your heating and cooling bills on top of it. Over any reasonable time horizon, the comparison is not close.

Using Us to Fix Your Ice Dams Will Make You Money

The same heat loss causing your ice dams is the same heat loss driving up your utility bills every single month.

When we air seal and insulate your attic properly, the heat your furnace produces stays in your living space — where it belongs.
You stop paying to heat the attic. You stop paying to cool a home that leaks air all summer.
The savings show up on your very first utility bill after the job is done, and they continue every month for the life of the home.

What Our Customers Typically See:

✓ 30–50% reduction in heating costs
✓ Substantial drop in summer AC bills
✓ More consistent temperatures throughout the house
✓ Less strain on HVAC — longer equipment lifespan
✓ Zero ongoing cost — savings stack month after month

This fix pays for itself.

Monthly savings on heat and AC offset the cost of the project — every month, every year, for as long as you own the home.

Other contractors cost you money forever. We save you money forever.

Don’t Call a Contractor That Has Never Dealt With This Before

Ice dam prevention is building science — understanding how heat, air, and moisture move through a home in a cold climate.
Most general contractors do not have that knowledge. They sell what they know how to install.

A.F.T. Insulation has spent over a decade focused exclusively on insulation and building envelope performance in Massachusetts.
When we come to your home, we find the specific cause of your heat loss, and we fix it correctly.
Not approximately. Not with a product that requires annual electricity and maintenance. Correctly.

✓ 10+ years working in Massachusetts winter conditions
✓ Full attic diagnosis before any recommendation
✓ Air sealing always included — the step most contractors skip
✓ Spray foam where it matters most
✓ One fix. Lower bills starting month one. No repeat visits required.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

I already have insulation in my attic. Why am I still getting ice dams?

Two reasons come up most often. Either the existing insulation has settled and lost effective R-value, or — more commonly — air is bypassing the insulation through gaps around light fixtures, plumbing, and the attic hatch. You can have R-38 batts and still have serious heat loss if the air leaks are unsealed. That is why air sealing always comes first.

Attic ventilation helps moderate temperature but it cannot compensate for warm interior air that is actively leaking up from below. Sealing and insulating the attic floor is still the required fix — ventilation alone is not sufficient.

Heat tape looks cheaper on day one. But add the annual electricity cost ($200–$400+), the eventual replacement cost, and the ongoing roof and water damage repair — and the total cost over 3 to 5 years is far higher than one proper attic insulation job. And our fix also lowers your heating and cooling bills every month, which the alternatives never do.

Call us at (774) 955-4113 and we will get you scheduled for a free assessment as soon as possible. Ice dam damage compounds quickly — the sooner we assess it, the better.
